This is the paradise of biodiversity of the planet and it is perfect for those seeking adventure, adrenaline and plenty action. Located in the Southwest Region of the State of São Paulo, most of the landscape encompasses natural areas, protected by PETAR ( Parque Estadual Turístico do Alto Ribeira (Alto Ribeira Tourist State Park) it features more than 300 caves. There are 67 special municipalities with countless activities that attract visitors all year round and they receive from the State Government a specific subsidy for investments in the infrastructure geared to tourism. In 1989, the DAD (Department of Support to Resorts Development) was created, by law 6.470/89, which is currently responsible for transferring resources, acting as a link between the municipalities and the State. The resorts are divided into four categories – Tourist, Climate, Hydro-mineral and Spa, they are destinations that make of the tourism, be it cultural, beach and sun, historic, religious, shopping or health a big business for their municipalities, generating richness with constant activity of the productive chain.
This Circuit located in the Valley of the Ribeira, its famous landscapes of incredible beauty was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Reserve of the Biosphere. It is in this ecosystem, in this biological diversity that live 400 species of birds, 183 amphibians, 146 reptiles and 131 mammals. More and more tourists from all over the world are attracted by surprising sceneries, among which the biggest concentration of caves in South America, archeological sites and quilombos (NT –In colonial Brazil, a community organized by fugitive slaves).
This destination features an outstanding attraction: the Guarani Aquifer, the largest underground fresh water fountainhead in the world. This gigantic reservoir ensures the importance of this Chapada (Mountain Range), and the site features imposing structures-cuestas and ridges. It is the choice place for the fans of tree climbing, canoeing, rafting, mountain bike, trekking and many more fascinating activities. The calendar of municipal events, with many regional folklore events and an excellent infrastructure provide great moments to the visitor.
Ecotourism, Cultural Tourism and Rural Tourism are the segments present in this Circuit located around the Highways of Fernão Dias and Dom. Pedro. It is a region characterized by ranges and water resources, like rivers, cascades and catchments. The visitor can also find museums, historical monuments, cultural and handicraft and there is a harmony in the contacts between the typical cities of the interior in the vicinity of the large urban centers. Very interesting and attractive diversity!
The municipalities that form this Circuit share common traits: historical heritage of the bandeirantes ( pertained to Bandeiras expeditions by Paulistas (inhabitants of the State of São Paulo and allied Indians to find precious metals and stones, enslave indigenous people and capture runaway slaves). The main attractions are the monuments and edifices built on wooden structures and compacted mud. This technique, very common during the colonial period, was known as Taipa de Pilão (mud and clay building technique). All the historical heritages of the region are classified by The Brazilian National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan). On the other hand, the Circuit Itupararanga – encompassing the cities located in an Area of Protected Environment – offers plenty entertainment and sports in nature: adventure sports, eco tourism and rural tourism.
The stage is the Rio Grande and the characters – forests, animals, mountains, cascades and caves – that make of this Circuit a privileged region with a remarkable quality of life. Those seeking nature in its essence, with animals and wild plants, caves that carry the sculptures made by the waters of Mother Nature during thousands of years and unforgettable landscapes have in front of them a differentiated tourism. On the one side, the history recounted by the museums, cultural centers, fossils, former railroad stations, and on the other the dams and lakes with an enormous variety of fish, much to the happiness of the visitors.

In this Circuit, there are itineraries for all tastes and they are literally mouth-watering! The home-made country sweets, the cakes still warm coming out from the oven, the fruits picked up from the trees and the flavor and perfume of the home-made wine with very old recipes; the State of São Paulo coffee history and stories. It is just a matter of getting all senses ready for this experience which, besides an irresistible culinary experience encompasses customs and roots of the Italian immigration, which are very strongly imprinted. It is also interesting to mention that there is an organic vegetable garden.
Rural Tourism involves very beautiful farms that reunite estates from the 18th ,19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. A different world, where comfort of the modern era blends into the history of our Paulista ancestors who engendered the drive of our State. The newest State of São Paulo road boasts a matchless aroma. There, the tourist visits flowerbeds, greenhouses and plantations, with the perfume of flowers and the peace of the countryside. The itinerary was designed by the tourism station of the Paranapanema, which is located on the premises of the Farm of Holambra and totalizes seven different roads, with different levels of difficulty and extension ranging from 4 to 14 km, going from an African violets greenhouse , cristantemus or azaleas, passing by orchards of plums, nectarines, apples or peaches, it is a special itinerary with an excellent hotel infrastructure and for the more adventurous there are even camping areas.
Located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, this circuit encompasses 11 cities and was created to foster the regional tourism of the Alto Tietê. The whole region is the home to specimens of the remaining flora and fauna of the Atlantic Forest, water springs, creeks, rivers and cascades, catchments, mineral water sources, mountains and parks. It is worth mentioning the natural and cultural attractions, hotel-haciendas, posadas, theme parks, stud farms, fish boats and typical restaurants.
There is no need to underline that the river Tieté takes over the scene. It is the center of everything. Mild weather, an invitation to stroll around, to nautical sports and angling. The Dam of Barra Bonita should be mentioned as one of the main points of tourist navigation: 142 km long, 12 m wide and 25 m maximum level difference, featuring an important economic value as it renders feasible the Waterway Tieté-Paraná. In addition to what, we have those Roads that bring the awareness for the country life, on the river banks with the traditions and harmony.
Get to know and become aware of the dimension of the heritage of the black race is the aim of the Route that retraced the steps of the black Africans in the territory of the State of São Paulo. This is the way to discover how they influenced the culture of this State. The North Coast of São Paulo as well as the Valley of Paraiba and the Serra da Mantiqueira witnessed the “comings and goings” of the black people on their lands, at different historical moments and now tourists are able to live anew the experience of this culture with the comfort, astounding landscapes’, great accommodations and fantastic cuisine.

This seems like a history class. It is the way the Valley appears to us, safeguarding a significant part of the history of São Paulo with roots going as far as the economic cycles (1889 to 1930), a regime often referred to as “Café com Leite” – (Coffee with Milk) when the muleteers used to stop over for a break in those areas, before resuming their long journeys . The fabulous scenery at the foot of the Mountain Ridges of the Mantiqueira and Bocaina, with groups of houses interspersed, farms exhibiting a diversified culture imprinted in the architecture, in the handicraft and in the cuisine.
Charm is one of the main features of this destination full of dazzling tourist scenarios formed mainly by the resorts of the Serra da Mantiqueira. The charms of the life in the mountains attract the visitors, especially when temperature drops dramatically. To all these factors add some perfect sites for Ecotourism and Tourism of Adventure, without forgetting the fantastic excursions by train going through the Mantiqueira, unveiling the magic side of Mother Nature.
In this region everything is superlative, with more than 180 beaches, 110 trails 220 cascades and 138 thousand hectares of preserved Atlantic Rainforest. Here also history is everywhere, mainly in the caiçara (fishermen) culture showing congada (folkloric dances of African origin), folias de reis (yearly festival) and so many other manifestations that safeguard their roots. This destination is also very popular amidst the fans of extreme sports and ecotourism. Cuisine is a full chapter in itself and it is, according to all visitors, absolutely mouthwatering, they enjoy the food tremendously, especially seafood.
What really matters is the faith. Multitudes make of the destination a refuge of a Christian manifestation, with purposes of life enhancement. This sounds rather obvious: The Sanctuary of the Saint Patroness of Brazil, the Virgin of Aparecida (Nossa Senhora de Aparecida); the first Brazilian Saint , Friar Galvão, and the Canção Nova, an evangelization work founded by Father Jonas Abib, in 1978, are a sufficient motivation for million devotees to travel to this region every year seeking comfort and peace.
